Okinawa prefectural museum opens on Sunday??
Loved the Ghibli exhibition. Excellent. And the general exhibition in the museum all about okinawa was fantastic
MoreThe permanent exhibition is cheap and worth it, if you're into history. It tells how Okinawa was from the paleolithic ages until current era. The titles and important information are also provided in English in the explanation of items, though longer and elaborate explanation are only in Japanese. Therefore, if you want to know deeper details, I recommend to ask for audio guide at the counter.
MoreOkinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Gallery *** must visit ***Another place you cannot miss when you visit Okinawa. A half day visit to the museum will allow you to have a quick glimpse into the history and culture of the island. To help you to learn about the exhibit, please remember to get an audio guide from the counter. It will great enhanced your experience. It has different languages English, Japanese, Chinese Mandarin, Korean. Well worth the effort. It has a huge display area, it is advisable to spend at least half a day here. If you wish to visit the art gallery too, then maybe it is good to spend a day here.If you are tired you can always go for a break at the café within the museum. Otherwise there is Mall nearby, walking distance, in which there is a food court where you get some food and drink and rest.#japan #okinawa #naha #okinawaprefecturalmuseum #travellog #review#冲绳 #那霸 #冲绳县立博物馆
MoreNice from the outside - maybe not worth paying to go in
Went to see the Ghibli Studio exhibition, Unfortunately there were no photos allowed of the exhibitions due to copyright reasons. In addition it would have been nice to have some English translations of the work, so could only look at the pictures and not ready everything. The exhibition it self was fantastic, and would recommend to anyone.
MoreNice museum with rotating displays, the outside is a stark contrast to the inside of it.There is a free audio guide that you can get.
MoreIt has 2 different tickets, permanent exhibition, and temporary oneThey're showing ghibli expo until october if I'm not wrong
MoreGreat way to spend your day. It can be covered a few hours and is very nice. Great gift shop too
MoreStunning design from the outside and when walk into the inner walk, you will see a beautiful traditional Okinawa house before entering the building. This is my favorite design cue of the museum. The history part of the museum is very well presented and quite enjoyable to walk. However, the art part of the museum is although interesting but doesn't feel particularly special. The 'Planned Exhibitions' changes for time to time, so it's hard to review but I'm sure they gotta be something special. The public park behind the museum (Shintoshin park) is also very nice and filled with lots of lively activities, especially in the weekend.
MoreWe went to the Ghibli Exhibition. The fee for entry is 1400 Yen. This does not include the rest of the museum. In my opinion, the price is way too high. All you get is what you can see on the attached flyer. Mostly movie posters, some merchandise you can buy in any Ghibli shop and only two interesting things. The creatures from Nausicaä and the cat bus from Totoro. Very rarely there are some scripts or drafts from the Anime here and there. Especially the creatures from Nausicaä are impressive, but I'm not sure if that is worth 1400 Yen.
MoreWe enjoyed walking and sightseeing here to see their building. Simple but special.
MoreThe museum provides a concise and well organised history of Okinawa and explains the distinct history and identity of the Okinawan people. That said, I would have liked the section on WWII and its immediate aftermath to be a bit better fleshed out. You get the sense that a lot has been left unsaid. The permanent art exhibition and its characterisation of the US and mainland Japanese troops give a hint of what this is, but you'll have to do more digging elsewhere to find the details.
MoreAmazing architecture and interior design. The permanent history exhibit is worth a visit. You do not really need the audio guide unless you are on a serious study trip. The exhibits have english captions printed too.
MoreReally like their permanent exhibition - it's a great place to learn about Okinawan history. Probably not very fun for kids though. But, they do have a small activity area where kids can use toys and other interactive tools to learn about Okinawa.
MoreIt is great for a first-contact over all view into the history of Okinawa and the Ryukyu Archipielago! It also displays very interesting temporary exhibitions.
MoreIt was ok. The exhibits were nice but there wasn't a lot to view.
A very good option for rainy day
It’s the best place for you to learn about Okinawa history. It’s lucky that there is a volunteer guide introduced me a lot things that doesn’t wrote in the book. I spent 3 hours here and I wished I have more time.
MoreBuilding is beautiful and have some things on the outside too. If you go with children (or like this stuff) don't forget to collect the stamps. We happened to be there during a Ghibli exposition and it was expensive and crowded, but had some nice stuff about the movies.
MoreWhen there at 9am and bought the one day pass unfortunately i did not know that there are a number of exhibits that are not open in the morning. Some even open from 2pm, so you might want to consider visiting here in the afternoon if you plan on checking everything. The one day pass cost 1280 yen that comes with a 200 yen coupon you can use from the souvenir shop.Photos not allowed inside the exhibits.
MoreVery thorough history of the island chain, many different attractions to keep you entertained. The parking was easily accessible and the museum is in a great location. Definitely recommend.
MoreI went to the Okinawan history exhibition and I found it so interesting, for sure is another place to visit if you’re into Japanese culture.
MoreInteresting museum about Okinawa history and culture. It's a must visit if you want to understand more about Okinawa's past and the people living there. All exhibits are in English. Good to spend a few hours. They also have special art exhibitions that rotate continuously.
MoreGood exhibits with translations in a range of languages and an audio tour for free if you wanted. I assumed the second floor exhibits would be open, but they weren't for some reason.
MoreOutstanding permanent collection detailing the history and culture of the people of the Ryuku Islands
MoreAn essential stop while visiting Okinawa to understand the area and its history. This museum is great for adults and children alike. Very interactive self-guided tour in many languages. You will gain a strong understanding of Okinawa past and present.
MoreGood exhibits, very neutral (politically) and informative. Make sure to get the audio tour, available for free. Art gallery includes more subjective pieces.
MoreDiscover Okinawa before the islands became Japanese in 1879. And the museum is situated in a nice neighborhood with a big park and many department stores.
MoreA terrible a complete waste of money. Each section of the museum was split off and monetized. We literally paid $30 for a 10 minute walk in the dinosaur exhibit. Don't waste your time or money with this place. You have to pay for each section of the museum. We did this for the kids and they didn't even enjoy themselves. I would give zero stars if I could.
MoreA very basic history of Okinawa. There is art and history in one which is cool. Student discount. English guidance. Though it is not very in depth
MoreGood place to learn a lot about the history of Okinawa. Be sure to get your free audio guide right across the ticket counter, if you have the Okinawa tram day pass, you will get discount for the entrance ticket
MoreHuge place and beautiful scenery with sad history.
So much history, so much information. Enjoyed it very much.
We only had time for the main permanent exhibition, however it's worth your time!
MoreThis review covers both the art gallery and history museum sections.First, the history museum is fantastic. You can get a free audio guide with your entrance fee, at least Japanese, English, Korean, and Mandarin are available with I believe a few other languages. You will see a huge breadth of history from early days and archaeological finds through feudal ages and into the present. Topics cover religious beliefs to trade and growth of Okinawa. Well curated, well organized, and the recommended path provides a great narrative overview. The art gallery was beautiful. With both perpetual and special exhibits, there's a great variety showcasing the history and development of art in Okinawa. The whole museum is clean, well organized, and situated beautifully. It's easy to get to from the Naha light rail as well. Definitely worth a visit, you could easily spend 2 to 4 hours here on a trip.
MoreThe entrance fee to the exhibitions were affordable. Very huge compound, easily spend up to 1 day here with interactive museum guides. Traditional music performances 0900hrs and 1400hrs lasting up to 45 mins (but not sure if its everyday, pls do check). Toilets facilities and media library with interactive children section. Child friendly, not crowded. Love it!
MoreWe learnt much about the history of Okinawa in this museum. We only had time for the permanent exhibits on Okinawa history though. A good stop at the early so the trip for deeper understanding and appreciation of the Okinawa people.
MoreLarge museum that hosts special events. Both permanent and temporary exhibits. Unfortunately there are separate entrance fees for the different areas.
MoreNice museum with a good display explaining the history of Okinawa. Interactive area for children, but mostly all in Japanese. Staff at information desk spoke English very well.
MoreOne of the must go spots on Okinawa check and see what traveling exhibits they have on their website.Parking is easy. And definitely kid friendly but may bore them depending on what exhibit is in.
MoreA great day to just see the history and enjoy time. There's a area for people who like Ghibli movies. Well worth it.
MoreGreat place to learn about Okinawa's natural and cultural history
The main section was really good. Didnt visited the others
Although it is not my first language, I'm writing this in English to recommend the museum to the worldwide visitors. This museum is really a nice place if you want to know history and culture of Okinawa. The visitors circulation is well designed and the audio guide (multilingual support and may be free as I remember) provides detailed explanations about every single display. If you have a plan to visit Okinawa, please don't miss the place.
MoreBeautiful museum - lovely architecture housing a nice collection of art and history about Okinawa. We learned a lot about the culture and the land!
MoreTook the fam here this weekend and the kids actually enjoyed themselves. A lot to view and exhibits to walk through and fairly cheap. Good experience. There’s also a display board you can get of the museum which has it mapped out and you can tap on the board to listen to certain historical content.
MoreWent to see Ghibli and it was amaizing! Plan ahead and leave plenty of time as it can be a long line of people waiting to get in.
MoreVisited the permanent exhibit on Okinawa' history. interesting artefacts and photographs. free parking here as well.
MoreIt was nice to learn about the history of Okinawa and how it became part of Japan. When you first walk in, it's like you're walking on water. There's also an art gallery and rotating exhibits. You get to choose which parts of the museumto visit and it's great of you only have a few hours to visit. Prices will vary depending on your choice of admission.
MoreA must visit if you in Okinawa. Informative museum with cool architecture in and out.
